What is Pickleball?
Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in North America, and Calgary has fully embraced it. Created in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, the game combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It's played on a court roughly the size of a badminton court with a net that's slightly lower than tennis height.
The sport exploded in popularity during the pandemic and shows no signs of slowing down. In Calgary alone, hundreds of players hit the courts weekly at venues across the city.
What makes pickleball so addictive is its accessibility. You can learn the basics in 10 minutes, but mastering the dinks, drops, and third-shot drops takes years of practice.
Basic Rules
Pickleball is played either as singles or doubles. Most recreational play in Calgary is doubles (4 players).
Service Rules
- Serves must be underhand and below the waist
- Both feet must be behind the baseline when serving
- Server announces the score before each serve
- In doubles, each player serves before the side-out
The Double-Bounce Rule
Each team must let the ball bounce once before returning it on the first two shots of each rally. After that, the ball can be played either in the air (volleyed) or after one bounce. This is the most important rule for beginners.
The Non-Volley Zone (Kitchen)
The 7-foot zone on both sides of the net is called the "kitchen." Players cannot volley (hit in the air) while standing inside this zone. You can step into the kitchen to play a ball that has bounced, but you must exit before volleying.
Pro Tip
Most beginner disputes happen around the kitchen line. When in doubt, stay back! It's better to let a ball go than to step into the kitchen and get called for a fault.
Equipment
Paddles
Pickleball paddles are larger than table tennis paddles but smaller than tennis rackets. They range from $30 for recreational paddles to $150+ for composite/carbon fiber competition paddles.
For beginners, a $40-60 graphite paddle is a great starting point. Brands like Selkirk, Paddletek, and Engage are popular in Calgary.
Balls
Pickleballs are plastic balls with holes, similar to wiffle balls but specifically designed for the sport. Indoor and outdoor balls exist — indoor balls are softer with larger holes. Most Calgary venues provide balls, but having your own is convenient.
Shoes
Wear athletic shoes with good lateral support. Running shoes work but court shoes (like tennis shoes) are better. Calgary's indoor courts can be slippery when wet, so proper footwear is essential.
Scoring
Pickleball uses rally scoring — you can score a point whether you're serving or receiving.
- Games are played to 11 points (must win by 2)
- At 10-10, play continues until one team leads by 2
- In tournaments, matches are usually best of 3 games
Always announce the score in this order: your score, opponent's score, server number (for doubles)
Tips for Beginners
1. Master the Third Shot Drop
After the serve and return, your third shot is crucial. A well-executed drop shot gets you to the net without giving your opponents an easy overhead slam. This is the skill that separates beginners from intermediate players.
2. Keep Your Paddle Up
Always keep your paddle in front of you, ready to react. The ball moves faster than you think, and having your paddle down costs precious reaction time.
3. Communicate in Doubles
Call "mine" or "yours" on balls in the middle. Call "out" if you think the ball is going long. Good communication prevents collisions and missed shots.
4. Watch the Ball, Not Your Opponent
Track the ball from the moment it leaves your opponent's paddle until it lands. Don't look up to see where your opponent is hitting — you won't be able to react anyway.
5. Be Patient
Pickleball rewards patience. Don't try to slam every opportunity. Dink at the kitchen, wait for an opening, and capitalize on your opponent's mistakes.
